Zuricalaw.com Vs. World's Tallest Mexican
Members present and game grades:
Zeke (A) – Other then a few missed easy layups and being a little winded this was the best game for me this season.
Mike A (A) – Boarded with intensity and scored on layups and mid range jumpers, pretty much set the tempo on both ends of the court in the first half
Mike B (B+) – Missed the first half due to parking issues, but played his usual game of hitting huge threes in the second half and helped pack the zone D in
Ahmad (B+) – his groin was a slight hindrance again and his shooting display of a week ago just wasn't there tonight, but he played some great D, sweeped the boards and showed some guts by playing injured again
Joe H. (A) – solid all around game, played real big down low and came up with some huge rebounds
Jeremy (B) – gets a B just for not getting a three second call alone, but also played some solid D and threatened to get on the scoreboard for the first time, all in all, made no errors in a game where he was forced into huge minutes.
Mike T. (DNP) – Was in California working on the Tupac investigation
Happiness Is a Warm Gun - John Lennon
Our song of the week is a reference to our sharpshooter joining us at halftime. At times it felt in the first half as we were holding down the fort until Mike B came to shoot the tall Mexicans out of the gym. Everyone played great in that first half even though our lead should have been much much more then what it was.
Playing against one third of the comedy troupe Human Giant from MTV (if you dont know them look it up, their pg looked exactly like one of the comedians), zuricalaw.com pretty much toyed with them for much of the first half. Joe and Mike beasted them down low and ahmad played a much more cerebral game after last weeks shooting display. Even jeremy is finally starting to take on the zuricalaw.com swagger.
Taking a small lead into the second half, the boys in green welcomed the appearance of their own ray allen to the contest. Mike B came in and promptly laid down his three point gauntlet and helped us tighten up the D.
The game was never in serious doubt and our record now stands at a strong 5-1. 2 more regular season games left and then its time to avenge our loss in the playoffs.
My only complaint about yesterday was that i was slightly disappointed that we didn't encounter a 6'5" Mexican.
Oh well, theres always next year.
REMINDER -no game next week

Game 5 recap 5/12/08
Zuricalaw.com Vs. MPI
Member present and game grades:
Zeke (A-) – played the point effectively. He didn’t feel the need to force passes or breakaways.
Mike A (B) – too much confidence in his jump shot, more effective around the basket. Played with intensity.
Mike B (A) – Made big shots when the team needed it.
Ahmad (A+) – sidelined in the first half with the continuation of a groin injury only to pull the team out of the swamp.
Joe H. (B-) – played big in the first half, ran out of steam by the second half.
Mike T. (A) – Kept the team close when they were struggling in the first half. Played an intense game on the defensive end.
Jeremy (DNP) – attend a meeting at the rotary club.
“The body is an instrument, the mind its function, the witness and reward of its operation” – George Santayana (1863-1952) on Ahmad’s performance last night.
The Lawmakers came into the gym last night fresh off their first loss the season. A loss that left a bad taste in the mouths of the players that were at that game (your author being one of them and so disgusted not to write a recap on it) that they needed to secure a victory in last night’s matchup not only to get back on track but to remind themselves that if they had a healthy and full roster, they would not have lost last week’s game. It was Ahmad, a.k.a. AO (Always Omnipresent…or Ahmad Oloumi, you choose) that was sidelined for the past couple of weeks with a groin injury. Jeremy was the only Lawmaker missing last night, so the team again needed to find a way to work through a decimated roster. Coach Zurica decided to leave Ahmad off the starting lineup and work him into the rotation slowly.
The Lawmakers came out against a much smaller albeit quicker team. They had the quintessential Asian point guard, tall anglo-saxon white guy, Italian looking doof, a juicehead, guido with a Chinese symbol tattoo on his arm with spiky hair, and of course no black teammates. The Lawmakers came out in a 2-3 zone (one of Anicito’s biggest criticisms of the team…however it made sense last night because we only had a healthy 5 and Ahmed). But what had happened was the zone was not effective against MPI as they knocked down three after three. The anglo-saxon gentleman was their best ball player and he was getting open looks on the wing through the skip pass and Anthony and Mike B had a hard time getting to the shooter. On the other end, Mike B made some big shots and Mike T made his 8 footers along with him and Joe dominating the glass and scoring at will. This would have been enough for the Lawmakers but there were many series’ in which passes and shots were forced and turnovers from the likes of Anicito who was handling the rock way too much. For the past 15 years Zurica has been telling Anicito not to dribble the basketball, at one point causing Anicito to form a complex and sit in his room for weeks playing with string puppets in order to gain hand strength.
Ahmad checked in but was useless. His lateral movements were infantile at best and he couldn’t move in the zone. The Lawmakers found themselves down by 14 with six minutes to play in the first half. That’s when the Lawmakers went into a man defense. Things started turning around when Anicito plowed through the guido with spiky hair. The guido tried setting a pick and from a combination of being frustrated and hating guidos with trite tattoos, Anicito lowered his shoulder and barreled this guy to the floor. It was classless but it was meant to spark Zuricalaw.com to start playing hard and get back into this game. Which is exactly what happened. The man defense put a tourniquet on the threes and Mike B and Mike T scored at will. At half time the Lawmakers had tied the game at 37.
Coming out of the second half Ahmad sat once again, re aggravating the groin injury. Being the cautious GM that Zurica is he wisely put Ahmad back on the bench, fearing that if Anthony worked Ahmad’s groin too much it could permanently make it hard for him. So the Lawmakers traded baskets with MPI and were +/- 3 for the opening ten minutes. That’s when Ahmad stepped back into the game. He knew that his contribution could not be his normal, attack the rim game. He had to use his wits to help zuricalaw.com (he did get high grades on the WONDERLIC test). Not known as a shooter Ahmed stepped his game behind the three point arc. At one point an MPI screamed out “can someone get on Sylvester Stallone”, meaning Ahmad resembles Stallone. From there the game was sealed. Three after three poured in from an unlikely source. Between Mike B’s three point threat and now Ahmad, MPI had no chance. Both Lawmakers were fluid and the rest of the team followed their lead. Even Mike T made some free throws. All in all, it was complete second half domination. MPI had been undefeated before last night’s game, but now it was Zuricalaw.com that rides the wave of success.

Zuricalaw.com Vs. The Cheetahs
Member present and game grades:
Zeke (C) - Way too many turnovers. Lack of intensity on both ends of the court.
Mike A (C) - couldnt seem to finish down low.
Jeremy (C-) - got a couple of open looks but couldnt convert.
Mike B (C+) - shooters slump. But did make some big free throws at the end of the game. Ahmed (DNP) - pulled groin. Team has reason to believe that he was injured during a yoga class with his girlfriend.
Joe H. (C+) - mixed it up down low. Also had a hard time converting, but did has some key put backs.
Mike T. (C) - rough time around the paint. Did a nice job rebounding on the defensive end.
"Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes" - Oscar Wilde
Last night Zuricalaw.com took the court against another sub-par team in the Cheetahs. Cheetahs only had five members show and it looked like the Lawmakers would sail through this team like a motor boat in the Suez canal. Spirits were high and the team proud of where they were standing, which was atop of their division at 2-0. Even without all-pro Ahmed, who happened to attain a groin injury, the team was ready to hold it down. Within the first five offensive possessions for the Lawmakers, Zurica turned the ball over four times. Mike B was 1/9 from the field, Anicito missed two lay-ups, and Joe and Mike T let six rebounds slip through their hands. It didnt help the basketball that we used would have been better if someone covered it in vasoline. It was Mike B's ball and Anthony had remarked that he thought they used it back in '93 in the Hemlock games. Anicito told the media after the game that the ball was the reason why he missed eight lay-up/put back, that is highly debatable. Between the Lawmakers' blunders and the lack of d on the Cheetahs' shooters, it was a three point game at the end of the first half.
The second half started a little better for Zuricalaw.com. They came out in a man defense and forced this terrible Cheetahs team to shoot, which was an eye sore in of itself, and their offense started to click with Mike B knocking down his three's and the big men finishing in the paint. Zurica was nursing a lower back injury which prevented him from attacking the basket and Joe H suffered a minor ankle sprain. On a side note, if this team is plagued by injuries I am going to blame bad karma on Mike T for way back when, when he broke Joe Longoboardi's face on accident and from then on in, everyone got hurt. In any event, the Cheetahs battled their way back and actually took a two point lead with three minutes to play. It wasnt until the Lawmakers got a key stop and then got down the court to get the ball to their big men. Anicito grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on the put back. He made his two free throws to tie the game. But once again, a wide open Cheetahs knocked down a three to regain the lead. With two minutes to play Joe H made a tip in and then the Lawmakers got a stop on the defensive end. Getting tripled teamed on the post, Anicito kicked the ball out to a wide open Mike B and he knocked it down. The Cheetahs made one last run but couldnt hold off the conversion of free throws in the bonus. The Lawmakers narrowly escaped a terrible Cheetah team. Personally, it was one of the ugliest games I've been a part of but I am very proud that the Lawmakers pulled it out to and are still undefeated at 3-0. Seriously!! Someone bring a quality ball so that we never have that problem again.

Game 2 recap 04/15/08
Zuricalaw.com Vs. Big Shots
Member present and game grades:
Zeke (B) - ran the point efficiently but forced too many passes.
Mike A (B) - came out lethargic in the first half but stepped it up in the second half. Lost a half of a grade bc he went 0/4 from the free throw line.
Jeremy (C+) - a little rusty in his first game since 1994, workouts with strength and training coach this week.
Mike B (A) - played his game as smooth as his haircut. The guy can shoot!
Ahmed (A-) - attacked the basket like a bull and finished. Lost a half a grade for getting a travel call.
Dan (fill in) (B) - big man was a little hesitant at first then came out in the second half ready to play.
Joe H. (DNP) - coach's decision
Mike T. (DNP) - PUBIC SYMPHYSITIS (this was actually listed as a reason why Mo William from the Bucks did not play last week, how embarrassing).
"We are made to persist. That's how we find out who we are." - Tobias Wolff
As the Zuricalaw.com team took center stage last night, it was going to be another test of team chemistry and strategy. With Mike T and Joe not able to make the game due to a prior commitment, which included 12 year old boys in short shorts, the feigned lawyers welcomed team member Jeremy to the hard wood and Dan who will be called in on an as-needed basis. Anicito stumbled in with Photo Frank, the two had kicked back a couple of brews prior to the game and Anicito resembled Jim Carroll from Basketball Diaries, minus the screen with the coach in the bathroom stall. Ahmed strolled in two minutes prior to game time is his quintessential flip flops, the backdrop of a quality basketball player (myself and zurica have always agreed that when a player walks into a gym holding his sneakers and wearing flip flops/sandals, 9 times out of 10, the guy is good). The team was six deep with Mike B's girlfriend cheering, as always, for her boy's team. Photo Frank was asked to do the book but started to shake as his mind raced through all sorts of numbers and graphs that involved team fouls, running scores, first half, second half, he almost had a nervous breakdown before someone told him to just do the scoreboard.
Zuricalaw.com took the court against their wily opponents, which included the look alike to Chris Dudley, Bam Bam Biggelow, Emilio Estavez from Men at Work, and Brain Grant. Zuricalaw struggled in the first half as Big Shots got out to a 6-0 lead and it wasnt until three minutes in did the Lawmakers (im opting for this name going forward because, we are the law in this league!) got a 3pt field goal from an unlikely source, Anicito. It was at this point that the Zuricalaw Lawmakers started to roll. Mike B (not to be confused with the Beastie Boy) controlled the perimeter and made Big Shots pay every time they left him open. Ahmed attacked the basket without fear. Anicito cleaned up some boards but failed to convert ALL of his free throws (coaches think that free throw practice with Anthony Mason should cease). Zurica made some nice passes off the dribble but also forced some bad passes into the post and on the break. Zuricalaw battled the Big Shots tooth and nail that first half as their Chris Dudley made his 5 to7 footers but couldnt finish around the backboard (mind boggling). That was when we decided to go from a man defense to a 2-3 zone. It was tight until the last two minutes of the first half when hustle from Jeremy and Ahmed forced turnovers, allowing Mike B to light up the arch and Dan to finish inside. It didnt help when Emilio Estevez starting screaming "kick balllll" at the ref and they T'd him up. I think the T was more for having a girl's scream. Jeremy did set a new Urban League record for most three second calls in a regular season game. I know he's just getting the rust out though. By the end of the half the Lawmakers opened up a 9 point lead.
In the beginning of the second half the Lawmakers struggled again. Zurica yelled tenaciously at Anicito for having a mismatch but Anicito wasnt even aware of it at the time. Ahmed was called for two flop fouls (one of which was legit) and a traveling call. The team forgot Mike B existed and tried to unintentionally ice him out, and Jeremy and Dan grinded it out to no avail. The Big Shots actually tied the game in the beginning of the second half (note: Anthony always does this to me, he tells me at half time how this game shouldnt even be close, this team is terrible, they're lucky we're up by 9 and not 90) and what happens they tie the game. its always a given. In any event, the Lawmakers best was better than their best, their quick was better than their quick, and they pulled it out in convincing fashion. Mike B's threes, hustle from all members, and a really good zone defense which there were block outs and rebounding across the board. It was a good win for the franchise.

Game 1 recap 04/07/08
Zuricalaw.com v. All Business
Players Present and Grades
Betancourt - A+ - his slick shooting put the game way out of reach
Zosh-A -hasnt stepped on a court since our last JCC game, but hasnt missed a beat
Ahmad - A- what an addition to the squad, we have our david lee, but with more offensive skill, dare i say anthony masonesque with a better 3 point shot
Joe- A- Also hasnt laced em up in a while, but his diving and hustle really kept everyone upbeat all game, even knocked down a few jumpers
Anicito - A - His usual steady charles barkleyesque self, didnt hit his one patented 3 a game, but we wont dock him for it
Zuricalaw.com - A- - Zurica gets a grade down for trying to force too many passes as usual, against the worst team money could buy thats ok, but against a better team, it will hurt us.
Bigger, Harder, Stronger, Faster - Kanye West
Mixing it up this season, im going to try and find an apropos song title for that days game. In this case, Kanyes title epitomizes the new and improved Huskies now known as Zuricalaw.com. There really is not much to say about that game since even the 08 knicks would have easily dismantled All Business. However, it was telling, that our team jelled so quickly, Betancourt, Ahmad and Joe slid perfectly into spots occupied by previous Huskies. Mike B was raining threes like phillip seymour hoffman, joe was diving around like a modern day xavier mcdaniel and ahmad was just crushing the other team like some amalgam of Jim Brown and shaq, but much prettier then that. Zosh and Anicito brought their usual professionalism and they are 2 cogs that are needed on every team. Not too many good things to say about the pg last night but i vow to pick it up against better teams.
Schedule isnt out yet, but lets just say, If we play like we did last night, with that intensity and determination, it doesnt matter who is on the schedule.
Also look out for the emergence of a new zuricalaw.com'er next week when Mr. Jeremy Doster makes his debut.
See you all next week.

Zuricalaw.com members
Welcome to our new team site. We will use this site to post recaps of our games and pretty much anything related to our bball team.
For anyone not a part of the zuricalaw.com squad these are our team members:
Anthony Z. - I am a selfless pass first point guard who excels at being a good-mediocre attorney.
Mike A. - Best way to describe his game is charles barkley lite or rather clarence weatherspoonesque. He is adept at offensive and defensive rebounding and can step out and hit a mid-range jumper. However, we know the game is lost once Mike steps behind the arc, so we try to limit that as much as possible.
Mike T. - Our big man, part Chris dudley, part Bill Walton. Never seen a foul he didn't like to take. After playing professionally since he was 8, the big fella finally bought a pair of high tops last season after spending his whole career in asics his ankles have never been happier. All in all you can't ask for a better big man. Just knows how to play the game.
Mike B. - This Pro's pro will probably be the key to Zuricalaw.com's success this season. I know he doesn't relish the superstar role, but so didn't guys like Carlos Beltran and Curtis Martin, they just like to go out and perform. However, for us to take that next step, Mr. Basketball needs to accept that he CAN be that man and just needs to go out and do it. His game is probably similar to Allan Houston in his long range accuracy and Derek harper in his heady play. Not a bad twosome to be compared to.
Joe H. - Not much is known about Mr. Heron, maybe his cousin can give us a scouting report. From memory, i believe Mr. Heron can provide some much needed energy and effort to the squad.
Jeremy D. - While I have never witnessed Jeremy's play first hand, his name rings out in the halls of many a Jersey basketball high school gymnasium. 2 Things that that J-dog brings to us is his jersey pedigree and the fact that we have 2 legal bulldogs on the squad.
Ahmad O. - While I have only seem Ahmed play during his inspired run to the championship of I believe the first Anicito/Zurica New Springville 3on3 tourney, his basketball skills cannot be overlooked. Mike summed it up best when he said Ahmed doesn't like to lose. And I, personally, enjoy having guys like that on my team.
